Sjoerd,
You are right. There are a load more complexities to consider. In this case I tried to keep it relatively straightforward. I also didn’t want to mix it up with too much politics, such as that NL-IX is KPN and that this increases complexity. I also didn’t want to be seen promoting Asteroid, just because it is run by great friends. The goal of this thing was to write in roughly two hours a basic piece that would achieve two goals:
- Explain for everyone outside the Netherlands what had happened in NL
- Make clear to everyone in NL and outside why this is not a traditional peering dispute as is often seen in relations between bit telco and big content.
I agree with you there are many nuances and AMS-IX isn’t everything in the Dutch market. In addition 80% of traffic bypasses the IXP generally and goes direct. I didn’t want to go into peering policies as this adds another layer of complexity. I just wanted to show there was something good in the Netherlands; the former Vodafone now T-Mobile fiber network and its interconnects. That was what was carelessly destroyed and is difficult to recover. Despite all peering issues, neither VodafoneZiggo nor KPN have messed things up that badly.
